About Colony Forming

The colony forming unit assay is a frequently used technique to measure the ability of cells/bacteria to grow, monitoring the formation of colonies from an initially known population. The formation of colonies requires intensive division of the original cells/bacteria, so the quantification of their number throughout the experiment constitutes the perfect indicator of the growth potential of cells. As a result, the CFC has become an assay of extensive use in cancer research to study the effects of drugs and the ionizing radiation therapy in carcinogenic cell proliferation.

The observation of the colony forming process and development by the human eye is a practical method to estimate the overall evolution of the assay, but an ineffective way to accurately compare the proliferation activity of large cell/bacteria culture populations or multiple assays at a time.
